There are now two different things called "Sidekick" in the Shopify world, and merchants confuse them every day.
One is Shopify's own AI assistant. It's free, lives inside your admin, and helps you run your store. The other is a third-party app called "Sidekick AI" on the App Store. Different product, different company, different job entirely.
This guide is about the first one. The native, built-in AI sidekick that Shopify keeps shipping new features for. And it's becoming a big deal fast. Shopify's Q1 2026 earnings showed weekly active shops using Sidekick up 385% year over year, with over 12,000 custom apps built through it in a single quarter (per PYMNTS reporting on Shopify's earnings). Roughly 42% of all Shopify merchants now use the company's AI features (Sidekick and Magic combined), according to Shopify's AI statistics.
We'll cover what Sidekick actually does well, what it doesn't (the honest list), the real prompts that work in 2026, and what to pair it with for the gaps. Because there are gaps. Big ones. The most important one being that Sidekick can't talk to your customers. Which, if you run a real store, is the half of customer support that costs you the most.

What Shopify Sidekick actually is
Sidekick is an AI assistant built into your Shopify admin. You open a chat panel, describe what you want in plain language, and Sidekick plans, executes, and reports back.
It's available across desktop and mobile, with text chat, voice mode, and screen sharing. Older articles still say "desktop only," but that's outdated. It works on your phone now.
Here's the key distinction worth getting straight up front:
- Shopify Magic: the embedded "Generate with Magic" buttons inside features. You click a button on a product page and Magic writes the description.
- Shopify Sidekick: the conversational agent. You open the chat panel and describe a task. Sidekick figures out which tools to use, what data to pull, and presents a result.
Magic is buttons. Sidekick is an agent. Both are free for all merchants.
Under the hood, Sidekick is a function-calling AI agent over Shopify's internal APIs. Not just an LLM wrapper. It reads your store's actual data, calls real Shopify functions, and shows you the changes for approval before applying them. That's why it can do things ChatGPT can't, like run a ShopifyQL query against your live orders.

The two "Sidekicks" merchants confuse
This trips up a lot of people, so let's clear it up right now.
| Native Shopify Sidekick | Third-party "Sidekick AI" app | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Paid (subscription) |
| Where it lives | Inside your Shopify admin | On your storefront |
| Who it talks to | You (the merchant) | Your customers |
| Job | Admin tasks, data, content | Customer chat |
| Built by | Shopify | A separate vendor |
This guide is about the native one. If you're looking for a customer-facing AI chat, that's a separate product category entirely, and it's worth checking out our Shopify customer service app guide for that side of the stack.
What's new in Sidekick for 2026
Shopify's been shipping a lot. Here's what changed in 2025-2026:
- Sidekick Pulse: a proactive layer that surfaces "you should look at this" recommendations without you asking. Runs in the background, posts into the same Sidekick panel. Requires Shopify Network Intelligence enabled. Not all stores are eligible yet.
- Custom app generation: describe an app, Sidekick builds it. Plan-gated as of April 2026 (Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus only). Basic plan had a grace period that ended in April.
- Sidekick App Extensions: in developer preview. Third-party apps can now expose their data and actions to Sidekick. So an email app could let you ask "what's my best-performing subject line?" and get an answer from within Sidekick chat.
- Saved Skills: up to 25 reusable prompts per account. Type "/" plus your skill name to fire them off. Shareable via URL with your team.
- Voice mode and screen share: ask Sidekick questions hands-free or share a screen for it to look at.
- Multilingual: officially 8 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese).
According to Shopify's Winter '26 Edition announcement, Sidekick "has gone from a tool with only minor usage to an essential part of the platform." That's the company describing its own product, but the usage numbers back it up.
For context, 84% of e-commerce businesses now rank AI as their highest priority (per Shopify's AI Statistics report), and Sidekick is the easiest entry point for Shopify merchants because it requires zero setup beyond logging in. If you've been on the fence about how AI is changing call centers and store operations, Sidekick is probably the first place to feel the shift.
What Sidekick is genuinely good at
This is the part of the article where most reviews stop. Let's go beyond the marketing.
Plain-English ShopifyQL queries
If you've ever stared at the Shopify Analytics builder trying to figure out which dimension goes where, this is the killer feature. You ask Sidekick a question in English. It writes the ShopifyQL, runs it, and shows you the result.
Try this:
"Show me my total sales for Canadian customers over the past 60 days, broken down by product."
That's a query that would take you 5 minutes of clicking. Sidekick does it in seconds.
Content drafting at scale
Product descriptions, blog drafts, email subject lines, image alt text. Sidekick will write all of it. The catch: outputs are rarely publish-ready without editing. They sound generic unless you feed it brand voice examples or specific style rules.
Use it for first drafts, not final copy. It's a speed multiplier, not a replacement for a writer.
Customer segmentation
Building Shopify customer segments through the UI is fine but slow. Sidekick is faster:
"Show me all customers who spent over $200 in the last year but haven't purchased anything in the last 90 days."
You get the segment ready to use in an ecommerce customer retention campaign, no manual filter-building required.
Shopify Flow automations
This one is huge. According to Shopify's Q1 2026 earnings, nearly 50% of all Shopify Flows generated in Q1 were built with Sidekick. You describe the automation, Sidekick builds the YAML.
"When inventory for any product drops below 10 units, send me a Slack alert and tag the product 'low-stock'."
Done. No clicking through the Flow builder for half an hour.
Theme block creation (Dawn 11.0+)
If you're on Dawn 11.0 or later, Sidekick can generate full theme sections from a description. "An interactive vertical timeline that highlights as the user scrolls" gets you a working section with settings. Not award-winning design work, but functional building blocks.
Discount code creation
Specific, accurate, fast:
"Create a 20% off discount code called WELCOME20, valid for first-time customers, expires in 30 days, limited to one use per customer."
The kind of thing that takes 90 seconds in the UI but 5 seconds with Sidekick.
Image generation
Up to 5 AI-generated images per request. Useful for hero banners, social media graphics, and quick product image variations. Quality is decent for placeholder work. Not a Photoshop replacement.
What Sidekick is NOT for
Here's the part most articles soft-pedal. We won't.
Customer-facing tasks
Sidekick cannot talk to your customers. Not on chat. Not on phone. Not in autonomous email replies. It's an internal admin tool, period.
Shopify Inbox uses Sidekick to SUGGEST replies, but the merchant still has to send them. Real-time customer conversations aren't Sidekick's job.
If you want 24/7 AI handling your inbound calls, you need a dedicated voice AI. That's what Ringly.io does for Shopify stores. Seth, our AI phone agent, resolves about 73% of calls without human intervention, integrates with Shopify for real-time order lookups, and sets up in around three minutes. It's the customer-facing half of the stack Sidekick was never built to handle. Check out our breakdown of AI phone agents for Shopify for more on this category.
Anything outside Shopify admin
Sidekick's context window stops at the admin's edge. It can't read:
- Your Klaviyo flows
- Your Gorgias or Tidio tickets
- Your Notion SOPs
- Your Google Sheets inventory files
- Your Zendesk macros
Sidekick App Extensions (still in developer preview) will start to close this gap. For now, if your question requires data from outside Shopify, Sidekick can't help.
Tax and regulatory questions
This one matters. Sidekick will answer tax questions confidently and sometimes wrong. Documented examples include incorrect Oregon sales tax answers and contradictory statements about plan-level Market limits.
The Surebright analysis put it bluntly: "Sidekick rarely says 'I don't know.' When a question is ambiguous, it returns a specific-sounding answer built from generic patterns that will feel right and often be wrong."
For anything with a regulator, lawyer, or accountant on the other end, verify with a human professional. Don't trust the AI here.
Brand strategy and brand voice (without coaching)
Sidekick can execute a task. It can't decide what task you should be doing. It writes product descriptions but doesn't understand your brand's positioning unless you spend real time teaching it.
If you want strategic recommendations, that's not Sidekick's strength. If you want brand-voice copy, plan to feed it specific examples and detailed style rules. Without those, outputs are generic.
Complex Liquid and design work
Basic theme edits work. Building you a beautiful homepage doesn't. Sidekick is not a designer. It's also unreliable on custom Liquid sections that involve conditional logic or template inheritance. For real design or complex theme work, hire someone.
Bulk operations without verification
Here's a real merchant story from the Shopify community forums. A merchant named Dawsonx ran Sidekick on 80+ product updates with explicit rules: don't use these specific words, keep meta descriptions under 160 characters, write in Spanish. Sidekick ignored the rules, busted the character limits, and reverted to English partway through.
The merchant called it a "liability" and had to audit every single product manually. The lesson: if you're running bulk operations through Sidekick, spot-check the output. Don't trust it blindly on volume work.
App recommendations (be skeptical)
Sidekick's app discovery has a documented bias issue. The Shopify dev community has flagged that Sidekick tends to recommend the same top three apps in every category, regardless of fit. That concentrates traffic on big apps and buries better-fitting niche ones. Use the App Store search directly when you actually care about finding the right tool.
How to build your AI stack around Sidekick
Here's the framing that almost nobody writes about: Sidekick is one piece of an AI stack. It handles admin tasks. You need other tools for the things Sidekick was never designed to do.
| Channel / use case | Sidekick can do this? | What to pair it with |
|---|---|---|
| Data queries inside admin | Yes | (nothing needed) |
| Content drafts | Yes | (Magic for in-line edits) |
| Shopify Flow automations | Yes | (nothing needed) |
| Inbound phone calls | No | Ringly.io for AI phone support |
| Live chat / email tickets | No | Gorgias, Tidio, Intercom |
| Email marketing flows | No | Klaviyo (built-in AI) |
| Storefront customer chat | No | Dedicated chatbot like Tidio or Intercom |
| Strategy / positioning | No | A human (you, or a strategist) |
The principle is simple: Sidekick is your INTERNAL AI. Pair it with customer-facing AI to cover what it can't. Think of Sidekick as the back office and the customer-facing layer as the storefront. You wouldn't expect your accountant to greet shoppers at the door, and you shouldn't expect Sidekick to either. Adjacent reads if you're building this out: our overview of AI shopping assistants, ecommerce customer service, and WISMO calls (which are one of the highest-volume call types AI phone agents resolve).
For Shopify stores, the most useful pairing is phone support. Phones still drive 30-40% of inbound support volume for most ecommerce brands (per our voice AI customer support analysis), and most stores either miss those calls or pay for an outsourced team that costs $3,000-$15,000 per month. AI phone support sits in the middle. Ringly.io handles 73% of calls without humans, runs 24/7, speaks 40 languages, and starts at $349/month on the Grow plan.

For tickets and chat, look at helpdesk-side AI. We've compared a few options if you want to dig deeper, including Gorgias vs Tidio and our Shopify helpdesk app overview. The pattern is the same: dedicated tools for dedicated jobs, with Sidekick orchestrating on the admin side.
Real prompts that actually work in 2026
These are copy-paste prompts that get useful output. Save the best ones as Skills (you get up to 25).
Data and analytics
"Show me my top 5 products by revenue from the last 30 days vs the same period last year."
"Which customer segment has the highest repeat purchase rate?"
"What was my average order value for new customers in April?"
Content
"Write a 60-word product description for [product] in a casual, direct tone. Avoid the word 'premium'. Include a benefit-led first sentence."
"Draft 5 subject lines for a back-in-stock email for [product]. Target a 25%+ open rate."
"Generate 3 blog post outlines on the topic of [X]. Include search-friendly H2 ideas."
Operations
"Create a 15% off welcome discount code, first-time customers only, expires in 14 days, one use per customer."
"Build a Flow: when inventory for any product drops below 10, send me an email and tag the product 'low-stock'."
"List all products that haven't sold in the last 60 days and tag them 'slow-mover'."
Customer segmentation
"Show me customers who spent over $200 in the last year but nothing in the last 90 days."
"Segment customers by lifetime value into top 10%, middle 80%, bottom 10%."
A great Skill to save
Save this as /morning-snapshot:
"Show me yesterday's revenue, top product, top traffic source, and any pending order issues."
One slash command and you get your morning briefing.
Common mistakes when using Sidekick
A few patterns we see merchants regret:
- Trusting tax answers without verifying. Sidekick hallucinates here. Always check with a real accountant.
- Skipping verification on bulk operations. If you're updating 50+ products, spot-check the output before walking away.
- Asking for brand voice without examples. "Write in our voice" means nothing to an AI. Give it 3 sample paragraphs.
- Treating it as a strategist. Sidekick executes. It doesn't decide what to execute.
- Confusing it with the App Store "Sidekick AI" app. Different products. Don't install the app expecting native Sidekick features.
- Expecting customer-facing capabilities. Sidekick is for you, not your customers. For customer conversations, use dedicated tools like an AI phone agent or a helpdesk.
- Asking about non-Shopify data. Sidekick can't see your Klaviyo flows or Google Sheets. Yet.
If you're building out the customer-side of your AI stack, our guide to voice AI for customer service covers the phone half in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Sidekick free?
Yes, included with all Shopify plans at no extra cost. The one exception: custom app generation is plan-gated as of April 2026. You need Grow, Advanced, or Shopify Plus to generate apps. Basic plan merchants had grace access until April.
What's the difference between Sidekick and Shopify Magic?
Magic is the embedded "Generate with Magic" buttons inside specific features (a product page, an email editor, etc.). Sidekick is the conversational AI agent that spans the whole admin. Magic is buttons, Sidekick is an agent.
Can Sidekick talk to my customers?
No. Sidekick is an internal merchant tool, not a customer-facing system. It can't answer "where is my order" calls or chat with shoppers on your storefront. For customer-facing AI, you need separate tools like a Shopify-native phone agent or a helpdesk chatbot.
Is the "Sidekick AI" app on the Shopify App Store the same thing?
No. The "Sidekick AI" app is a third-party paid product that handles customer-facing chat on your storefront. The native Shopify Sidekick is free, lives in your admin, and helps you (the merchant) run your store. Different products entirely.
Does Sidekick work with my Klaviyo, Gorgias, or other apps?
Not yet. Sidekick's context window stops at the Shopify admin's edge. Sidekick App Extensions (in developer preview) will start to close this gap. For now, your third-party app data is invisible to Sidekick.
Can Sidekick build a full custom Shopify app for me?
Yes, on Grow, Advanced, or Shopify Plus plans as of April 2026. Over 12,000 custom apps were built with Sidekick in Q1 2026 alone (per Shopify Q1 earnings). Most are simple workflow tools, not full storefronts.
Is Sidekick safe to trust for tax questions?
No. Sidekick has documented hallucinations on tax and regulatory questions. For anything with legal or financial consequences, verify with a real professional. Use Sidekick for store ops, not for tax advice.
What languages does Sidekick support?
Officially eight: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese. English has the most complete feature coverage.
The bottom line
Sidekick is one of the best things Shopify has shipped in years for merchants who actually want to use their admin. It's free, it's getting better fast, and the 385% YoY growth in weekly active shops shows merchants are finding real value in it.
But it was never built to handle customers. It can't pick up the phone, answer a live chat, or reply to a support email autonomously. If you're using Sidekick to run your store, pair it with customer-facing AI for the channels it can't touch. Phones first, because that's where the highest-friction calls land and where most stores leak the most CSAT.
Try Ringly.io free for 14 days and get Seth answering your Shopify calls in under three minutes. It's the half of the AI stack Sidekick was never built to cover.
