ChatGPT ecommerce means two different things: shoppers finding your products inside ChatGPT, and you using ChatGPT as a work tool for your store. For selling, ChatGPT is a product discovery channel. On Shopify the buyer completes the purchase on your own store.

What people mean by ChatGPT ecommerce

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. For a store owner, the question is what it means for selling and for running the store.

The question can mean one of four things:

  • Being found: shoppers asking ChatGPT what to buy and your products showing up in the answer.
  • Buying inside the chat: whether a customer can pay without leaving ChatGPT.
  • Building a store: whether ChatGPT can create an ecommerce website for you.
  • Running the store: drafting copy, building a custom GPT, or answering customers.

The rest of this page takes them in order.

How ChatGPT shopping changed from Instant Checkout to product discovery

On 29 September 2025, Stripe and OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Stripe described it this way: "Starting today, ChatGPT users in the US can buy goods from US-based Etsy businesses, and, coming soon, over a million Shopify merchants, like Glossier, Vuori, Spanx, and SKIMS, directly in the chat."

Shopify merchants were listed as coming soon, and the launch covered US users and US-based Etsy merchants.

By March 2026 the plan had changed. CNBC reported on 24 March 2026 that OpenAI was moving away from Instant Checkout. OpenAI's own words: "We've found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery."

The short version: OpenAI is letting merchants use their own checkout experiences while it focuses on product discovery. On Shopify, the buyer completes the purchase on the merchant's online store.

How it works on Shopify today: US buyers, your own checkout

Shopify describes the setup directly. In its post on how agentic commerce works, Shopify says ChatGPT is "Live for millions of Shopify merchants who sell to US buyers, regardless of store location; buyer completes the purchase on the merchant's online store via an in-app browser."

Two details matter for your store:

  • The US part is about the buyer: the condition is that you sell to US buyers, so a store based outside the US can qualify.
  • The checkout is yours: the buyer finishes the purchase on your online store, opened in an in-app browser.

So the buyer finishes the purchase on your store, not inside ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT build an ecommerce website?

A store needs a platform to sell on, and Shopify is one. PCMag says Shopify's Basic plan ($29 per month) "lets you sell products on social media or a website (either hosted on Shopify or another platform)."

So the practical split looks like this:

  • The platform sells: Shopify is where the store is hosted and where the buyer completes the purchase.
  • You stay the editor: anything it writes about materials, sizing, shipping times or return terms needs checking against what is actually true for your products.

Where ChatGPT helps a store and where it stops

The table below separates ChatGPT's role from what your store or a support channel has to cover.

Task ChatGPT's role What your store or a support channel covers
Being found OpenAI says it is focusing on product discovery A store with accurate product pages and clear policies for the click-through
Checkout OpenAI lets merchants use their own checkout experiences Your own checkout, since the buyer completes the purchase there on Shopify
Order status Support job for your store Your order data, carrier tracking and a channel the customer can reach
Returns and cancellations Support job for your store Actions taken in your store, such as a return request or a cancellation
Phone support Support job for your store A support line that answers calls and hands off to your team

Custom GPTs and plugins: what they add and what they do not

OpenAI announced GPTs in November 2023, which let users customize their own version of ChatGPT for a specific use case. Wikipedia adds that GPT Builder was released in the same month, and that plugins were introduced in March 2023, including external ones from developers such as Expedia, OpenTable and Zapier.

So yes, you can build a custom GPT for your store. A reasonable one might hold your sizing guidance, your tone of voice and your standard replies, and you could use it internally to draft answers faster.

Order status, returns and phone calls are support jobs, and they need their own channel connected to your store. That is covered in the next section.

What changes for support when shoppers arrive from ChatGPT

On Shopify, the buyer completes the purchase on your online store, so your store is where the order is placed. That means order status, returns and cancellations questions land with you, and a caller needs answers tied to the real order. Our guides cover the options: AI chatbots for ecommerce, AI customer service tools and a longer list of 11 AI customer service tools. If you are weighing a chat widget on your site, the AI chatbot buyer guide walks through what to check.

How to prepare your store this quarter

You can control what the shopper meets when they arrive. This is the order that makes sense:

  1. Check your product pages: make sure descriptions, sizes, materials and shipping details are accurate and written plainly, since a shopper arriving from a chat answer decides quickly.
  2. Tighten your policies: returns, cancellations and shipping times should be easy to find and say one thing, in the same words everywhere.
  3. Confirm you sell to US buyers: Shopify's condition is selling to US buyers, regardless of where the store is located.
  4. Decide what a custom GPT is for: GPTs let you customize your own version of ChatGPT for a specific use case, so name that use case before you build one.
  5. Decide who answers after the sale: pick the channels customers will use, including the phone, and make sure each one can see real order data.
  6. Review what your team answers every week: the repeat questions show you what belongs on a page or in an automated answer.

On AI more broadly, the Tapcart blog reports that around 55% of businesses used AI in 2023 and 72% in 2024, citing a McKinsey report, and says ecommerce brands are leading the charge. For tools beyond ChatGPT, see our roundups of AI automation for ecommerce and the best ecommerce AI software.

If returns are a pain point, the playbook on reducing returns with chatbots is a good next read.

How Ringly.io handles ChatGPT-era support on the phone

A caller who asks where an order is needs an answer tied to that order. Ringly.io is AI phone support for Shopify brands, and its phone rep, Seth, matches the caller's number to a Shopify customer, looks up the order and answers "Where is my order?" with the carrier, delivery status, latest scan and estimated delivery date. Returns go into Shopify as drafts your team approves.

AI Coach is a chat assistant inside the Seth dashboard. It reads your settings and real calls, tells you what to fix first, and suggests changes as cards you apply or dismiss, so nothing changes without you. How Coach works is in the help centre.

The integrations that matter here are Shopify for orders and returns, Gorgias and Zendesk for tickets, Twilio for your phone number, TrackingMore for carrier tracking, and an API option through custom skills. Ringly.io charges per phone conversation, and the details are on the pricing page.

The guarantee, as stated on the site: "Seth resolves 65% of your support calls, or you don't pay for that month." Conditions are on the guarantee page.

Do I need to be in the US to sell through ChatGPT on Shopify?

No. Shopify says ChatGPT is live for merchants who sell to US buyers, regardless of store location. The requirement is about who you sell to, not where your business is based. A store located outside the US can qualify, as long as it sells to US buyers.

Can I build a custom GPT for my store?

Yes. OpenAI rolled out GPTs in November 2023, which let you customize your own version of ChatGPT for a specific use case. A reasonable one might hold your sizing guidance, your tone of voice and your standard replies, for internal use.

Can I sell on Shopify's Basic plan outside my own website?

PCMag says Shopify's Basic plan ($29 per month) lets you sell products on social media or a website, either hosted on Shopify or another platform. The platform you choose is where the store lives, and ChatGPT is one place shoppers may find it.

Is ChatGPT enough to handle customer support for an online store?

Support questions after a purchase, such as order status, returns and cancellations, depend on your Shopify data and actions in your store. So you need a support channel connected to your store, including one for phone calls.
