Agentic commerce is a model where AI agents shop for consumers. They research products, compare options, and can complete purchases autonomously, according to Shopify. For a store your size, the live pattern is narrower: an assistant finds your product, then the buyer pays on your own checkout. Skip checkout-protocol work this year if you sell mainly in the NL or EU. ChatGPT on Shopify is live only for merchants who sell to US buyers, and Google's UCP-powered checkout was aimed at Canada and Australia, then the U.K.

What agentic commerce is, in plain words
A shopper asks an assistant to find something. The assistant compares options. A purchase can follow without ten extra tabs.
That is the story vendors are selling. What you will actually meet in 2026 is usually those first two steps, then your existing cart.
So what does this mean for a Shopify or DTC shop that is not a US giant? AI shopping assistants are becoming another discovery channel, next to search and social. Your job is the product feed. Protocol work can wait until a buy path names your countries.
- For the shopper: they describe a need in ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, or Amazon, and the agent proposes products.
- For you: the title, image, and price have to be clear enough that an agent can trust the listing.
- For the money: in the Shopify setup that is live for US buyers, payment still happens on your store.
People mash this together with agentic AI, which is a wider label. Agentic commerce is the shopping job. Agentic AI after the sale is tickets, returns, and questions. The catalog feed sits with merchandising.
- Worth your time this year if: you already sell to US buyers, or you can ship to the US or Canada and want those assistants to see the products.
- A distraction if: you only fulfill inside the EU and you were waiting for ChatGPT to charge a Dutch card inside the chat.
Product data first. Geography second. Protocols last.
How an AI agent buys from a store
Here is the Shopify path that actually exists for US buyers, without the protocol folklore.
- Step 1, the ask: a shopper tells an assistant what they want, including size, budget, or delivery country.
- Step 2, the comparison: the agent researches products and compares options. That comparison step is the core of the definition above.
- Step 3, the feed: on Shopify, visibility runs through Catalog. Every product needs a title, at least one image, a price, and shipping to the US or Canada to qualify, which is the hard gate for an NL or EU-only catalog (Shopify).
- Step 4, the handoff: ChatGPT is live for millions of Shopify merchants who sell to US buyers, regardless of store location. The buyer completes the purchase on the merchant's online store via an in-app browser (Shopify).
- Step 5, your checkout: shipping promises, returns, and the payment methods you already offer still have to work. The agent did not invent a new tax engine.
If the SKU cannot ship to the US or Canada, you can stop at step 3. Catalog will not take it. The ChatGPT path above is built around US buyers.
- Blocked by shipping: EU-only delivery never qualifies for Catalog.
- Blocked by missing fields: no image or no price, same result.
- Blocked by audience mix: NL customers on your site are not the buyer Shopify is describing for ChatGPT.
Getting in front of ChatGPT is a feed and merchandising job. Start with getting ChatGPT to recommend your products.
ACP, UCP, and agent browsing
Three names get used as if they were one switch. They are separate products, with separate owners and separate maps.
ACP is the Agentic Commerce Protocol that Stripe and OpenAI put under Instant Checkout. On 29 September 2025 they launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT for US users and US-based Etsy businesses, with Shopify merchants such as Glossier, Vuori, Spanx, and SKIMS listed as coming soon (Stripe).
UCP is Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. In January 2026 Google announced it as an open-source web standard meant to let AI agents talk to retail systems (Wikipedia).
On 20 May 2026 Google said UCP-powered checkout would roll out across Canada and Australia in the coming months, and later to the U.K. (Google (The Keyword)).
The third path is the unglamorous one: ChatGPT finds the product, then checkout stays on your store for US buyers, as Shopify already describes.
| Path | Who runs it | Buy step | Where it was aimed | A poor fit when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACP (Instant Checkout) | Stripe and OpenAI | Pay inside ChatGPT | US users and US-based Etsy businesses at launch. Shopify names were listed as coming soon | You need in-chat payment for EU shoppers |
| UCP | UCP-powered checkout in Google surfaces | Canada and Australia, later the U.K. | Your orders are EU-domestic | |
| Agent browsing | Shopify with OpenAI | Pay on your store, in an in-app browser | US buyers. Store location can be anywhere | You cannot ship to the US or Canada, so Catalog never takes the product |
- Work the browsing path if: you sell to US buyers and the Catalog fields are complete.
- Park ACP if: Instant Checkout was the feature you wanted. That launch was US users and US-based Etsy businesses.
- Park UCP checkout if: you were counting on a Google buy button for the Netherlands. That May 2026 note named no EU country.
ACP is the wrong hill for a small EU catalog. UCP checkout is the wrong calendar to manage this quarter. Agent browsing is the path Shopify describes as live for US buyers.
What is actually live in September 2026
The demo everyone remembers is a bad template for a 2026 build.
In March 2026 OpenAI moved away from Instant Checkout. Merchants use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on product discovery. OpenAI said the initial version did not offer the flexibility they wanted, in a CNBC report dated 24 March 2026.
As of 15 September 2026, commercetools still describes OpenAI's Instant Checkout as paused. Infrastructure providers are instead helping retailers build their own agents, rather than handing all discovery to third-party platforms.
Discovery is the live layer. In-chat checkout is a bad implementation target.
Other launches you will see in pitch decks:
- PayPal Instant Buy: PayPal and Perplexity launched Instant Buy on 25 November 2025 for U.S. users, so research and purchase could happen inside Perplexity (PayPal Newsroom).
- Amazon Buy for Me: Amazon launched Buy for Me in April 2025 for a subset of U.S. users on Android and iOS. An agent could buy from third-party brand sites inside the Amazon Shopping app (Retail Dive).
- Google UCP checkout: the 20 May 2026 post says Canada and Australia in the coming months and later the U.K., and names no EU country.
Or you can ignore every in-chat pay button and keep the site you already run. None of those US launches are a reason to wire a new checkout into a Netherlands store this year.
Does it matter for a store your size?
Treat it as a discovery problem. A protocol integration can wait unless you already sell into the US and have spare engineering time.
Shopify (citing McKinsey) relays a McKinsey estimate that AI agents could mediate $3 trillion to $5 trillion of consumer commerce globally by 2030. That figure is a scenario, not a forecast you should drop into a budget. Treat it as a signal that consultancies are taking this seriously. Keep it out of your 2026 revenue line.
The store-level number that is about traffic: Shopify reports that in Q2 2026, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 197% year over year, and orders from AI searches also grew three times.
So the channel can already send sessions. Before spending anything, read what Shopify merchants get from Catalog and related agentic commerce setup. Skip a custom ACP build.
- This matters now: titles, images, prices, ship-to countries, and whether a US buyer can finish a normal checkout on your site.
- This can wait: being first on a Google or OpenAI checkout protocol in a country they have not opened.
- This is a longer roadmap: where AI in ecommerce is heading over several years, which is wider than one ChatGPT toggle.
A brand that already ships to the US should tidy Catalog and the landing experience. A brand that will not add US or Canada shipping should not reshuffle the year because McKinsey published a 2030 scenario.
If you do not sell to US buyers and you will not add those lanes, the practical impact this year is close to zero. Spend the time on the channels that already convert.
The NL and EU caveat: US-first, PSD2, and what to ignore
The buy-step launches that exist (Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, PayPal Instant Buy with Perplexity, Amazon Buy for Me) were all launched for US users.
Shopify Catalog will not qualify a product unless it ships to the US or Canada. A store in the Netherlands that only ships inside the EU fails that check. Selling to US buyers is the ChatGPT gate in Shopify's write-up. Store location can be anywhere.
But the Catalog rule does not care where the admin sits. A Rotterdam merchant who already ships to the US can be in the feed. A Rotterdam merchant who will not add those lanes cannot.
Google's UCP checkout plan: the 20 May 2026 post names no EU country. Then there is payment law. In Europe the payment layer has to work under PSD2, with a PSD3 revision in preparation. Strong customer authentication raises the question of how far an agent can be allowed to pay for a human (BotRank).
Shoppers are not lining up to skip that step anyway. A survey of 13,500 European consumers (Deloitte, reported in September 2026) found people will hand over comparison and price-finding at 24 to 34%, but willingness to delegate falls to 8% at checkout (commercetools (citing Deloitte)).
- Ignore ACP roadmaps: they started with US users and US-based Etsy businesses, and Instant Checkout is paused.
- Ignore EU Google checkout timelines: none were published in that May 2026 list.
- Do not ignore Catalog geography: if you want Shopify's AI channels, US or Canada shipping is the switch.
- Do not ignore checkout trust: in that Deloitte survey only 8% would hand the checkout step to an agent.
PSD2 requires strong customer authentication, which raises the question of how far an agent can be delegated to pay.
What to do this year, in order
The short version: make it possible for an agent to understand the product and send a US buyer to a checkout you already trust. Do not volunteer to be a protocol guinea pig.
- Decide the geography on purpose: if you will not ship to the US or Canada, Catalog is closed and you can stop. If you will, set shipping so the product can qualify.
- Fix the feed fields: title, at least one image, a price. That is the documented Catalog bar. Treat it as a data-quality checklist.
- Make on-site checkout boring in a good way: shipping policy, returns, and payment should match what you claim, because the buyer may land in an in-app browser on your store.
- Make the landing easy: the buyer finishes the purchase on your own store, so shipping and returns policies should be one click from the product page.
- Do the Shopify ChatGPT homework: connecting a Shopify store to ChatGPT and what merchants actually get in the Shopify admin for this channel are the merchant-shaped tasks.
- Skip checkout integrations: especially in the EU. Discovery plus your own checkout is the live pattern. OpenAI paused its in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026.
Do the list in that order. Jumping to step 6 because a conference stage was exciting is how you waste a quarter.
- Take Catalog work if: US demand is real for you, or you are willing to ship there.
- Leave ACP and UCP checkout alone if: your buyers are in the NL or the rest of the EU.
- Keep your own checkout if: you like refunds, tax, and payment methods you already understand.
Clean data is your project this year. A paused US checkout can sit on the backlog.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between agentic commerce and agentic AI?
Agentic commerce is the shopping loop: research, compare, purchase. Agentic AI is the wider idea of software that takes actions, including after someone already bought. If you are deciding on Catalog and ChatGPT visibility, you are in commerce. If you are deciding how tickets get resolved, you are in a different queue.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
Treat it as unavailable. OpenAI told merchants to use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on discovery. Coverage on 15 September 2026 still called Instant Checkout paused. Plan around your store's checkout.
Is agentic commerce available in Europe or the Netherlands?
Discovery can still happen. The merchant programs you can actually point to are built around US buyers and US or Canada shipping. Google's UCP checkout rollout did not name the EU. Do not assume a European shopper can finish a ChatGPT purchase inside the chat.
Do I need to do anything for agentic commerce if I run a small Shopify store?
If you ship to the US or Canada, yes: the Catalog fields (title, image, price) and a store checkout that is ready for the buyer ChatGPT sends over. If you only sell inside the EU, skip the protocol project. Watch the channel, keep product data tidy for humans first, and wait for a buy path that names your countries.
How do I make sure AI agents pick my products?
Qualify for Catalog if you can ship to the US or Canada. Then treat ChatGPT like a picky comparison shopper: complete titles, real images, clear prices. There is no sourced shortcut beyond that feed bar.
Will AI agents replace my store's checkout?
In the Shopify setup that is live for US buyers, the purchase finishes on your store. OpenAI already stepped back from Instant Checkout. European survey data shows willingness to delegate collapses at payment. Keep your checkout. That is still the product.
